We are currently seeking a Packaging Engineer to join our Packaging Design & Innovation Department in Richmond, VA to assist in the development and execution of printed packaging materials. The successful candidate will work with Brand Management, Design Agencies, and our suppliers to develop packaging structures to be used in our Operating Companies’ manufacturing operations.

Specific accountabilities include:

•Effective collaboration with Brand Management and Design Agencies during the design process to develop innovative packaging structures and implementation plans that ensure high quality, cost effective solutions
•Effective collaboration with Graphics Specialists, Commercialization and Manufacturing organization to ensure commercial printability and manufacturability of packaging materials
•Participative leadership with cross functional groups to ensure new packaging meets product requirements as well as consumer expectations
•Developing and directing packaging execution plans from concept development through implementation in the factory
•Utilizing project management skills and tools to manage development processes, budgets and timelines
•Continuously monitoring projects to engage and inform stakeholders regarding project status and recommend course corrections as needed
•Ensuring all Financial, Legal and Regulatory Compliance requirements are met during the course of packaging development
•Independently applying technical principles and techniques to analyze and solve problems

Specific Skills

Qualifications include:

•A Bachelor’s of Science degree in Packaging Science, Plastics Engineering, Industrial Design or related Engineering/Technology discipline
•3+ years professional experience in packaging development, packaging materials development and/or industrial design
•Practical knowledge in traditional packaging disciplines, materials, and technologies, such as folding cartons, labels, rigid and flexible plastic containers, paperboard, plastic films, adhesives, metal substrates, converting, injection molding, thermoforming and blow molding
•Familiarity with standard packaging development and innovation processes
•Ability to write and maintain packaging specifications
•Strong skills in verbal and visual communication, interpersonal interaction and project planning
•Ability to influence others without authority
•Ability to convey innovative packaging concepts through the use of free-hand sketches or software tools
•Ability to be flexible in the face of rapidly evolving markets and Brand priorities
•The skill to produce physical models of packaging concepts utilizing internal and external rapid prototyping equipment and services (Kongsberg, Roland Printer, Objet 3-D Rapid Prototyping )
•Advanced knowledge of computer software such as ArtiosCAD, Autodesk Inventor / Solidworks (or similar) and Microsoft Office
•Ability to effectively present and communicate complex technical information to cross functional groups and management
•Willingness to travel domestically and/or internationally to support business objectives
