Altria Client Services’ role is to help Altria Group and its operating companies responsibly meet their business goals by providing the high-quality services they require in a financially disciplined way. We are currently seeking a highly qualified Safety Engineer to join our Health & Safety department in Limerick, PA.
The successful candidate will provide direction on the interpretation and implementation of Altria’s safety policies, provide safety engineering (technology), auditing & training and conduct specialized safety work to include: providing direction on projects and evaluating work environments for John Middleton Company’s manufacturing facilities.
Specific accountabilities include:: * Determining the best means to prevent accidental losses to people, property and product, and ensure OSHA compliance. Develop safety and health project scopes * Providing technical direction to resolve safety issues related to operations * Providing leadership to safety and health initiatives. Lead safety and environmental team * Supporting programs administered by Altria Client Services Safety, Health & Safety (ALCS SHE) to include safety training, assessments, and compliance related inspections. To ensure strategic objectives are achieved the candidate will work closely with ALCS SHE staff and facility personnel * Conducting work place (facilities, equipment, processes) and job task assessments to identify, evaluate and eliminate or mitigate hazards to an acceptable level by applying safety technology * Preparing and presenting for implementation of safety devices, controls and procedures * Evaluating and reviewing modified processes and non-routine work where the hazard potential is unknown to ensure all potential risks have been thoroughly studied and prevention plans or safety technology applied * Reviewing OSHA regulatory and state of the art safety trends. Developing and coordinating OSHA compliance and accident prevention programs for all operations to ensure a high quality and standardized approach * Developing and maintaining John Middleton Company’s safety programs and training presentations to ensure compliance with Altria policies and current regulatory standards * Assessing all John Middleton Co. operations to ensure proper controls, programs, and training are being maintained to prevent accidents, and to ensure OSHA, BOCA and NFPA compliance * Assessing major construction jobs, evaluating contractor safety pre-plans to ensure that they do not introduce unnecessary risks to John Middleton employees and that they are properly safeguarding their own employees * Developing, conducting and monitoring employee safety, health training and emergency preparedness to control losses, improve safety performance, comply with OSHA and ensure standardized and consistent training throughout all John Middleton Company operations * Conducting company-wide trend analysis, accident investigations and site inspections of operational procedures, facility design, equipment, loss prevention systems, materials and loss experiences. Analyzes data according to current regulations and makes appropriate recommendations to prevent new or recurring accidents * Maintains professional knowledge of existing and proposed changes in federal, state and local safety and health laws and regulations. Stays informed of hazard control technology to maintain subject matter expertise
Specific Skills Qualifications include: * Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Engineering or related field. A Master’s degree is preferred * Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in the development and coordination of plant safety programs * Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification is preferred * Specific courses in safety and health management, OSHA compliance, accident prevention, accident/incident investigation and analysis, compliance inspection and audit, hazard control technology, hazardous materials management, emergency planning and response, ergonomics, fire protection, construction safety, measurement of safety performance, industrial psychology/behavioral aspects of safety, educational and training methods for safety, system safety, and industrial relations are required * In-depth knowledge of OSHA, BOCA, ANSI, ASTM and NFPA regulations or standards * Working knowledge of mechanical, electrical and pneumatically operated equipment, and the ability to take sound environmental engineering principles and apply them to "real world" situations. Reading and interpreting engineering drawings is important * Knowledge of manufacturing processes, best practices and operations; and knowledge of statistical analysis in order to assess loss performance and direct efforts to the areas of greatest risk * Strong communication skills including ability to clearly articulate and convey environmental requirements, results, trends, and procedures as well as through clear, concise presentations, program documents, and multimedia training * Proficient computer skills (MS office programs) to develop data and trend analysis, prepare charts and graphs for presentations, develop multi-media training courses and conduct stress modeling * This position requires climbing ladders and onto platforms or other elevated surfaces to review equipment and layout design
